Residents In CT Town Call 911 Over Cable Outage

Posted: Updated:
Fairfield, CT -

"It's a little disheartening and frustrating when you get individuals who feel they can call 911 just out of convenience," says Lieutenant Jim Perez of Fairfield Police.

911 dispatchers with the Fairfield Police Department in Connecticut received several phone calls from residents last night. They wanted to know why they lost their cable television.

This is one of those 911 calls:

The caller says, "I'm just trying to figure out what's going on, we have no TV."

To which the dispatcher responds, "Ma'am, 911 is for life-threatening emergencies."

And the caller answers, "I know that, I know that."

And so the dispatcher asks again, "Is this a life-threatening emergency?"

To which the caller answers, "No, we're just trying to find out what's going on? Is it a life-threatening time?"

Fairfield police then alerted the community on its Facebook page that a cable outage is not life-threatening:

This is neither an emergency or a police related concern. Please direct your inquiries to Cablevision. 911 should only be called for life threatening emergencies ONLY. Incidents that are not of an emergency nature may be reported to the Fairfield police department. Misuse of the 911 system may result in an arrest

"I know that if I were in need of help or if you were in need of help, you want to get a clear line of communication right over to 911, exact location, so they can get to you as soon as possible. Seconds count when it comes to emergencies," explains Lieutenant Jim Perez.

The Cablevision outage affected numerous towns and lasted about six hours. Some customers lost their phone and Internet as well and contacted their state senator to find out what was going on.
