Michael Vick Named Eagles' Starting Quarterback

PHILADELPHIA -

Eagles head coach Chip Kelly has settled his quarterback competition.

At a news conference Tuesday, Kelly named Michael Vick the game-one starter over Nick Foles.

"We've evaluated the situation, and Michael Vick is going to start for us against the Washington Redskins," Kelly said.

Kelly quickly clarified that Vick will be the starter for the season. The coach said he met with the quarterbacks Tuesday morning and explained the situation.

"They all understand the plan and know where we are going forward," Kelly said.

Vick is expected to play at least the first two quarters in Saturday's preseason game with the Jacksonville Jaguars.

He said the QBs have been evaluated throughout training camp, offseason workouts and more.

"We felt like we had a good amount of tape, a good amount of us seeing them on the field and seeing them in a lot of different situations, and wanted to put a guy in place, if we could, with enough situation to get ready for the season," Kelly said.

Vick has played great this pre-season. He would have really had to play poorly not to be named the starting quarterback after Saturday's game.

Through two games, Vick has thrown 13 of 15, for 199 yards, one touchdown and a passer rating of 113.1. His only interception was a sort of Hail Mary pass at the end of the first half Thursday against the Panthers.

Foles played well in that game but after a shaky start that included a red-zone interception on his opening drive.

Kelly said he was happy with the way both quarterbacks handled the situation, noting that competitions like these can sometimes get "testy."

"I thought it brought out the best in both those guys," Kelly said.

"No suspense remaining. Michael Vick named #Eagles starting QB for game one vs Redskins by Chip Kelly," FOX 29's Howard Eskin tweeted Tuesday morning.

Kelly had a chance before a national television audience Monday night on FOX Sports 1 to name his starting quarterback. But he didn't, opting instead to continue singing the praises of two guys he says he knew nothing about before January of this year.

"Both of those guys have played at a high level in both preseason games," Kelly said Monday night. "And really, through practice itself, you know, there really hasn't been a day where one guy has just gone south and the other guy's taken off."

The coach added during the FOX Sports 1 interview, "It's, I think they've both pressed each other, they've both made each other better. I think they're both completing close to 80 percent of their passes, or somewhere around there. So, I think it's brought out the best in both of them."
