1st Avenue repaving project causes dust storm

Posted: Updated:
NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -

Pedestrians on First Avenue on the Upper East Side covered their mouths and noses, but it didn't really help. That's because the plumes of dust continued to sweep across First Avenue, kicked up by the cars, trucks and buses.

Here's why: the city is repaving First Avenue from 72nd Street to 125 Street. The overnight work started last week. But the problem is that trucks have not been spraying down First Avenue with water to keep the dust down. That's created a huge problem for residents who are living and working in a daily dust storm.

The Department of Transportation says it is increasing its "dust suppression" efforts.

Others people, including a building maintenance worker, were doing their own dust suppression by hosing down the sidewalk and curbs.

It appears the subway bedbug problem we've been reporting is getting worse. Commuters already have to contend with sweltering platforms, scurrying rats and packed train cars, and now there's another transit woe: fear of bedbugs.
