Actress Sues Local College for Discrimination

Posted: Updated:

"What we'll known actress is suing local college for discrimination?"

You may remember her from the film "Zoot Suit", you can watch her in the FX show "The Bridge", where you won't see her anymore, is teaching at Pomona College.

"It was like a punch to the stomach" says Alma Martinez, who has filed a lawsuit alleging wrongful termination as well as national origin and gender discrimination against the college, where she has worked as assistant professor of theatre, for years.

The school's own Department of theatre and Dance recommended she be promoted to associate professor with tenure, .according to the lawsuit, but she was denied tenure and fired. Her last day was June 30.

Mathew Barragan, the attorney with the Mexican American Legal Defense and Education Fund, which is representing Martinez, says that no person of color, let alone a Latina woman, has been granted tenure at the Theatre School. He adds Dr Martinez (yes, she has a doctorate from Stanford) is more than qualified for the position.

Aside from the Stanford PHD, she holds and MFA from USC, is a Fullbright Scholar, has a diverse body of work, and is about to be indicted in the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences.

"Pomona college has one of the most diverse faculties, in terms of both gender and race" says Mark Wood, senior director of communications at Pomona. College. "The tenure review process is designed to be both exhaustive and fair. However, since this matter is now under litigation and involves private information about a former employee, we can not comment further.."

If you can't catch her teaching, Dr. Martinez is playing a really dark character on the FX show the Bridge. Put it this way, this is NOT her Sgt Elizabeth Cruz from Adam 12.
