Officials: Student brings gun to Atlanta high school

Posted: Updated:

A 15-year-old student brought a gun to an Atlanta high school on Tuesday, officials said.

Parents of students at the New Schools of Carver were notified about the incident just as news spread of another gunman at a DeKalb County school.

According to Major Keith Meadows of the Atlanta Police Department, a school resource officer at Carver was notified that a 15-year-old girl had a handgun in her purse.

"The school resource officer wound up notifying the administrators within the school," Meadows said. "They game-planned and got together, went and confronted the student. And it was at that time, the school resource officer was able to recover a .22 caliber handgun."

Meadows commands the Atlanta Police Department's unit of 43 full-time school resource officers. He says the girl with the gun in her purse was actually holding it for a boy.

"We were able to identify both students and both of them have subsequently charged in connection with that particular handgun," Meadows said.

There are three resource officers at Carver and seven metal detectors at various entry points throughout the school.

Atlanta Public Schools Safety and Security Chief Marquenta Sands said that the metal detectors were tested, working and used Tuesday; she doesn't know yet how the gun got in the school.

"All of that is a part of the ongoing investigation," Sands said. "So we will let APD do their thing in helping to determine -- if we can determine -- how the gun actually got on campus."

Sands is pleased that no one was hurt because the handgun was recovered and credits the student who tipped off a school resource officer.

"If they know something, if they see something, we want them to say something so that we are able to at least minimize the threat," Sands said.

Atlanta Public Schools just entered into a contract agreement to hire 73 full-time Atlanta police officers to protect its schools. Forty-seven of those school resource officers started on July 1; the rest will report to Atlanta's middle and high schools by January of next year.
