Taxi accident victim remains in hospital

Posted: Updated:
NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -

A British tourist named Sian Green remains at Bellevue Medical Center on Wednesday recovering from Tuesday's terrible accident involving a taxi in Midtown Manhattan. Hospital officials won't say what condition she is in; only that the 23-year-old is in the intensive care unit.

A cab severed her left foot and mangled her right foot near Rockefeller Center.

Plumber David Justino saved her life by using his belt to stop her profusely bleeding leg. He came by the hospital Wednesday, but was not allowed to visit her.

Green's close friend Keshia Warren is by her side. They were also together at the time of the accident at 49th Street and Sixth Avenue when a cab jumped the curb more than 15 feet and ran over the British tourist. Green was on the first day of a trip to New York.

In a possible a road rage incident the cabbie and a bike messenger, Kenneth Olivo, raced to make the turn and the cab ended up on the sidewalk.

Dr. Mehmet Oz, whose office in nearby, came to help Green as well. Several vendors tried to save Green's foot by putting it on ice. Doctors were not able to save her left foot. The cab driver, Mohammed Himon, was given a summons for not being authorized to drive the cab. The Taxi and Limousine Commission has begun proceedings to suspend his hack license. The police have not added criminal charges yet.

Police Commissioner Ray Kelly said police are still investigating what happened.

Green's parents are on their way to New York to be with their daughter. Her father was quoted as saying that their close family is devastated.
