Pam Shriver: Tennis Players Who Are Older Are Better

Posted: Updated:

Tennis great Pam Shriver says the sport today isn't the same as it was when she played in the late 70's. "It's a little different now, it's much more global. You have top players from Serbia, Poland, you have great Asian players--things that never would have been heard of 25 years ago. The U.S. is not where it was."

Shriver, who is a paid spokesperson for Salonpas, talked to Steve and Maria about the U.S. Open (she'll be there starting Monday for ESPN) and about who the best bets are in the U.S. Open "not that anybody bets". She also explained why she thinks tennis is at the top of it's game.

"Tennis is in an extraordinary time right now, particularly the mens game, it's the golden era on the mens side, some fascinating things on the womens side."

Pam also talked about another noticeable trend in tennis today: players who are older but better.

"There are more great 30 and over players so knowing how to manage your body sort of late in a career is really important too."

Most people think tennis when they hear Pam's name but baseball is very much a part of her life today: she's a minority owner of the Baltimore Orioles. "I grew up in Baltimore, that's where I played all my tennis. It's fun".
