Tim Skubick: State now color coding school performance

LANSING, Mich. (WJBK) -

There they go again.  The Michigan Department of Education is once again making decisions at the top of the education pyramid and foisting them upon the poor schools at the bottom of the heap.

Effective today a new color code is in place known as the Michigan School Accountability Scorecard. Oh boy.

This is to show how well every school is doing.  Seems the old system wasn't working as parents apparently  couldn't figure out why their child was not getting scholarship offers from Harvard.

So the higher ups in the MDE decided that a school that is doing swimmingly well gets a green code, next is lime green, those in the middle get yellow, then orange and finally the dreaded red if they are flunking more kids that you can count.

Where were the legislative hearings or town halls on all this which is the normal process for setting policy?

And what if the schools in the U.P. don't like green? Maybe the schools in Traverse City prefer fuchsia? Don't they deserve the right to pick?

Better yet, why not have the kids and parents exercise their local control. Surely that could get this question right:  What's your favorite color?

Apparently somebody did not consider the fact that if you stick a child with the stigma of an ugly color, such as lime green, (ugh) imagine the impact that will have on the kid's self- concept which everyone knows must be natured.  Test scores will plummet as they labor under the "label" that will follow them the rest of their lives.

You can hear the kids from other districts taunting them by saying, "lime green. Lime green.  You guys are dumb as beans."

Accordingly in the future, job applications will ask for  your "color" disclosure.

And then there are the evitable law suits based on discrimination.  Parents who are colored-blind won't have any idea how their children are doing.

Somebody get the ACLU on the horn.

Actually if colors must be used, they could mimic the Olympics: Gold. silver, bronze and then find two more.  Blue and purple are nice don't ya think?
