Nasdaq trading halted for 3 hours due to technical issue

Posted: Updated:

Trading for Nasdaq-listed securities was halted for three hours because of a technical problem, but officials are not elaborating on what exactly happened, leading to lots of speculation.

The exchange sent out an alert to traders at 12:20 p.m. EDT saying that trading was being halted because of problems with a quote dissemination system.

The Nasdaq composite index was frozen at 3,631.17. Then after trading resumed hours later, the index closed at 4 p.m. up 38 points, or 1 percent, at 3,638.71.

The index is up 20 percent so far this year.

President Obama was briefed on the Nasdaq problems, according to a White House spokesman.

The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission was involved, spokesman John Nester said earlier. "We are monitoring the situation and are in close contact with the exchanges, he said."

Thursday's problem is the latest in a string of technology-related mishaps afflicting exchanges and brokers as markets over the past two decades have migrated to electronic systems, according to the WSJ.

The Nasdaq did not mention the problems on its Twitter or Facebook accounts.

Things are looking up for cute little Cami King. Not only is her cancer in remission, she also just got to meet Mickey, Minnie and Elmo in Times Square. But, if you can believe it, there's something else this 4-year-old is even more excited about: Times Square is going gold. The chairman of the Times Square Advertising Coalition announced the crossroads of the world is going to light up in gold to raise awareness for pediatric cancer research.

It appears the subway bedbug problem we've been reporting is getting worse. Commuters already have to contend with sweltering platforms, scurrying rats and packed train cars, and now there's another transit woe: fear of bedbugs.
