ATLANTA -

Atlanta Braves outfielder Jason Heyward underwent surgery to repair a fractured jaw after being hit by a pitch.

The team tweeted
that two plates were placed in Heyward's jaw; one plate on each fracture site.

Heyward was injured after being struck by a 90 mph fastball from New York Mets left-hander Jonathon Niese in the sixth inning of Wednesday's game.

Dr. Glenn Maron performed the procedure in Atlanta, the team said.

It's not immediately clear how long Heyward will be out of action. According to a report on MLB.com, he is expected to be out four to six weeks. The Braves regular season ends on Sept. 29. The team currently holds a 15 game lead over the Washington Nationals, making the playoffs a strong possibility.

Material from the Associated Press was used in this report.
