NEW JERSEY (MYFOXNY.COM) -

Three people were shot at a New Jersey PATH train station early Sunday morning when an argument over a woman being bumped ended in gunfire.

The shooting started on a train at the PATH Pavonia-Newport Station and spilled out onto the platform. Police had police tape around the outside of the station as they investigated.

Video from the scene showed a handcuffed man being taken away on a gurney. It was unclear if he was one of the shooters.

Witnesses described a wild, chaotic scene as people tried to flee the gunfire on the crowded train.

One witness tells MyFoxNY.com that things started when a man bumped into a woman. The woman's brother was with exchanged words with the man. The man who bumped the woman pulled a gun and opened fire. The second man then pulled out his own gun and returned fire.

The witness told MyFoxNY.com, "We heard this lady screaming and we didn't know what was going on so we held the doors."

He says the situation could have been much worse if the doors had not been held open on the train, allowing people to flee. The gunmen reportedly also got off of the train at that time.

The incident took place about 5:30 a.m. The witness says all three victims were shot in their legs. The conditions of the victims were not known but all three were expected to survive.

One of them, 34-year-old Tari Turpin of East Orange, was charged with two counts of aggravated assault and weapons offenses.

PATH train service was suspended between Journal Square and Hoboken in both directions after the incident.

NJ Transit Light rail was cross honoring PATH tickets at the Hoboken and Exchange Place stations. The closure was causing problems for golf fans trying to get to the Barclay's tournament's final round.

Police found his gun in the station and they say he illegally possessed a gun because he should have never had a firearm due to his criminal history.

Turpin is facing assault and weapons charges.

Several beaches on the New Jersey and New York coastlines are open to visitors but closed to swimming because of high surf and dangerous rip currents. The National Weather Service has issued a High Surf Advisory and Rip Current Statement for the area beaches because of the effects of Hurricane Cristobal, which is expected to track south and east of the Jersey shore through Thursday.
