Checkin' in with Merissa Lynn: High 5 Sports Football Caravan

I didn't think high school football could get bigger than what it is in Augusta.

I worked in the Garden City for two years, co-hosted a half-hour Friday night football show, and did stories on teams and players on a weekly basis. Prep football is king there, because there is no other local football there (yet).

K-Rod and the rest of the crew introduced me to the whole "High 5 in your face!" deal upon my arrival to Atlanta. I saw the trophies FOX 5 delivers to the "Team of the Week" with the gigantic hand attached to it. Geez, I thought. They can't be that into high school football with everything else going on, right?! We have the Falcons, Braves, Hawks, and not to mention all the local colleges we cover. WRONG.

Last week happened, and so did the High 5 Sports Football Caravan. The FOX 5 Sports crew hit up 50 different schools in just five days to kick off the high school football season. There were 3:00 am wake-up calls, and lots and lots of driving. Now granted, I didn't go to all those schools (K-Rod did!), but there wasn't one school I visited that didn't know what the "High 5 in your face!" was. It's a PHENOMENON. How awesome! Coaches, players, parents, fans – they're all into it! It is insane. I almost couldn't believe my eyes at what I was seeing last week.

Slowly but surely I'm learning this sports department really takes pride in covering local sports the right way. Because, let's be honest here: we've got the big sports networks that can take care of the rest. Local sports is up to the individual markets, and FOX 5 really knows how to get it done the right way. I'm thrilled to be a part of the High 5 Sports family on Friday nights at 11:00. There is so much to look forward to, and I love the aspect that includes you guys – the viewers! – getting in on all the action. Remember to vote for the Game of the Week on www.high5sports.com!

Got any requests for something we should try on High 5 Sports?! Let me know on Facebook or Twitter! This show is NOT about us – it's about YOU!

Last week, I had the opportunity to finally cover THE circus. Yes, THE SEC Media Days. College football really gets my juices flowing, and I couldn't wait to get to Hoover, Alabama.

The All-Star Break is here, and it couldn't have come at a better time for the Braves.  They're hurting-- literally.  But can the team stay healthy enough to make a playoff run?
