Charisma Carpenter: Survive It And Thrive

Posted: Updated:

"As terrifying as it was, I was able to sort of live through it, survive it, and now thrive."

It's one thing to host a show about people surviving horrible attacks and telling their stories. It's another when you've been through it yourself. Charisma Carpenter's new series "Surviving Evil" debuts Wednesday night on Investigation Discovery and her story is the first to be told in the premiere. Steve and Heather asked her what it was like to go back and discuss something most people would try and forget.

"The project itself was so inspiring and empowering to women, it's educational and I think that I thought it was the appropriate time, I had enough distance from the experience...I'm in a healthier place."

Charisma opened up about the what happened to her 20 years ago on a beach in San Diego. Her attacker was a rogue cop who wound up being a serial rapist. Charisma was his last intended target.

"It turned out he had been stalking me...we were at the beach...he came out of nowhere with a gun and a hose over his face and started to rob us, and tie us up and threatened to rape me and my friends were heroes, ended up jumping him and they were they were shot...it was a horrific, horrific experience."

Charisma says the show allows her and other victims to come to terms with the past and use it for their futures.

"They weren't broken by it, they've gone on, they've survived."

"Surviving Evil" also gave Charisma a chance to do something with her friends that she wasn't able to do before.

"I never had the chance to say thank you till I shot the show."
