FOX 29 Getting Results: Neighborhood Eyesore

Posted: Updated:
PHILADELPHIA -

A North Philly neighborhood is trashed. Garbage lies on the street and weeds are overgrown.

"Whoa, it's at least, what, three acres," says Gabriel Beasley.

Gabriel Beasley describes the view from his North Philly row home on West Glenwood Street.

"It's an eyesore. It's dangerous to the kids," he says.

He says for the past year, what now looks like a jungle, continues to grow.

"There's a small mound here, but it's mostly weeds. I guess they're six feet tall, at least."

Gabriel says that for as long as he can remember, an old textile factory was here. Several buildings remained until neighbors got the city to tear them down last year when bricks and glass started to fall from them.

But since then, grass has sprouted, leaving neighbors with more than an eyesore on their block.

"We have rodents that tear our trash up, put fleas on the porch. We have a lot of children around here. The raccoons, they carry rabies. We don't want the kids to get bit."

Neighbors last called the city's 311 line on July 16th to report the problem, but say they've gotten nowhere.

We called Licenses and Inspections on Monday and were told that this is an open case. It started in June of this year by clip, the city's "community life improvement program."

An L&I spokesperson also says someone bought the property in 2007 and currently doesn't have a vacant lot license, so a $150 violation will be issued.

In the meantime, Gabriel, who is also the block captain, says that neighbors have what he calls a simple request.

"Give us a break. All we want is the grass cut," he says.

L&I says they will send out an inspector, possibly as soon as Tuesday, depending on what they determine. A spokesperson says workers with CLIP would eventually clear the lot. We'll let you know when that happens.
