The hunt is on for the man who robbed a bank in Greenwich, Conn. and fired gunshots at police as he fled.

Metro-North rush-hour rail service was suspended for about an hour during Wednesday's evening rush hour as police searched for the robbery suspect near the Greenwich train station.

Metro-North spokeswoman Marjorie Anders said the rail line shut power at 5:05 p.m. at the request of local police. Two trains were held and searched.

Power was restored at about 6 p.m., but residual delays affected train service in each direction to and from Grand Central Terminal in New York City.

Greenwich police Lt. Kraig Gray said no shots were fired, but the suspect may have been armed.

Gray told the Greenwich Time the man implied to a teller at the People's United Bank branch that he had a weapon but didn't show one. He escaped with an undisclosed amount of cash.

City and MTA police searched for the man. Police later released surveillance photos of the suspect.

Matt Stymacks of Fairfield told the newspaper he was at the northbound platform in Greenwich at 5 p.m. and noticed one or two police cars. Then he and other commuters saw about a dozen police cars and officers with rifles and police dogs. "So for a brief moment, everybody was pretty freaked out," Stymacks said.

He said his train approached the platform at about 6 p.m. Greenwich-bound passengers got off single-file, and those leaving Greenwich boarded the same way. He said he got home before 6:45 p.m.

NOTE: An earlier report that indicated that shots were fired was not accurate.
