Memorial Mass Held As Villanova Community Deals With Student Death

Posted: Updated:
RADNOR TOWNSHIP, Pa. -

A very sad day on the campus of Villanova University after the sudden death of an 18-year-old sophomore found dead in a campus dorm room this morning. A memorial mass was held tonight for Kinara Patel. Just how she died is still a mystery tonight.

Students, friends, and faculty poured into St. Thomas of Villanova Church. They came to pay their respects to Kinara Patel. Friends posted pictures on Facebook to honor the sophomore business school student.

"We are all Just in shock. And of course are thinking and praying for her friends and family," says Alexandra Wallace, a senior.

Police were called to a dorm room at Sullivan Hall about 10 this morning. That is where the girl was found unresponsive. Police say she died overnight, but there were no obvious signs of foul play or a suicide.

"It's the standard policy with the Radnor police and the Delaware County Medical examiner that anytime there is a death outside a medical facility that we are called to investigate that," says Lt. Andy Block of the Radnor Township police.

Police say Patel, from North Jersey, was out with friends in Bryn Mawr on Wednesday night. They do say that alcohol may have played a factor in her death. An autopsy is scheduled for tomorrow morning.

"And while any death is heartbreaking, to lose someone this young is devastating. Kinara Patel, a sophomore in our business school, was a very important part of this family," says Liz Kennedy Walsh, a Villanova University spokeswoman.

Grief counselors are being made available to anyone on campus. Friends, many of whom were too broken up to speak, say that the loss of a student in the prime of her life on the first few days of classes is tough to take.

"It's very tragic and very sudden, especially since this happened on campus. It hits a lot closer to home for most of us," says Alexandra Wallace.

Police are trying to put together a timeline of where Patel was located in the hours before her death. The Delaware County medical examiner should release the manner of death tomorrow afternoon.
