DECATUR, Ga. -

Decatur softball coach Chuck Lewis spent more than a decade on the field with his oldest daughter.  Since her tragic death, he's returned there for comfort, and at the same time, he's helping future players excel at the game she loved.

Lewis introduced his daughter, Madison, to the game of softball when she was just 8.   He says he spent lots of time catching for her over the years.

"She was a strong left-handed hitter, had a beautiful swing," he recalled.  "Could hit the ball a country mile."

It's a passion she took with her to college in Alabama.  But tragically, she lost her life in a car accident at school a year and a half ago.  Now, her father finds comfort in the fields of Oakhurst Park.

"I have no idea how I've been able to move forward," her father said.  "Some days it's tough to. Being out here helps me. This is what Madison and I did together for 13 years."

Madison's No. 2 jersey has been retired, and there's a plaque honoring her free spirit.  Now, a scholarship has been created in her name to help send future softball all-stars like her to college.

Coach Lewis says the very first Madison Lewis Scholarship could be awarded later this year.
