Almost a million gather for West Indian Day Parade

Posted: Updated:
NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -

The annual West Indian Day Parade always provides great food, festive music and colorful costumes – and Monday. Celebration didn’t disappoint.

Monday’s 46th annual West Indian Day Parade is in full swing. About a million people were here today to celebrate Caribbean heritage -- and they say it’s the sights, sounds and traditional costumes that keep them coming back.

There was no shortage of pride or color at the West Indian Day Parade.

“The drumming, just the culture, we get to know each other and have some cultural empathy,” said one parade goer.

New Yorkers celebrated their Caribbean heritage as they strutted down the Eastern Parkway, with moves that would make Miley Cyrus blush.

“I love the fact that everyone has come together and dancing and enjoying each other, no violence,” said another parade goer.

The party started just before noon. Floats from islands like Jamaica and Guyana came through with dancers and stilt walkers.

One lady has been coming to the parade for the past 10 years, she says it’s the drumming that keeps her coming back.

“Just the music, the excitement, the energy, it's just wonderful.”

One young spectator says she’s proud that her Guyanese culture was celebrated.

“I like to just represent where I come from.”

Organizers say the parade will be going strong until it ends at 6:00 p.m.

Everyone hates long lines at security checkpoints and the TSA knows it. Now the TSA is sponsoring a contest to encourage anyone with new ideas about how to make the airport security lines go faster. Often for air travelers, the security checkpoint experience is the worst part of their trip. That's why the TSA turned to the crowdsourcing site Innocentive asking for ideas pledging a total of $15,000 in prize money, with at least one $5,000 award.
