Shoppers look for back-to-school deals

Posted: Updated:
NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -

September is here and for millions of kids, that means classes are about to begin.

However, back to school sales can mean big business especially when the weather is bad, but some parents are trying to cut back on their spending.

On Monday the sun's not out, so what's the next best thing to do this Labor Day -- do some back to school shopping! That's what a lot of parents are doing here today at the Queens Center Mall in Elmhurst, but according to one statistic, parents will be spending less this year than they did last.

So much shopping to do and for some, so little time.

“Start tomorrow, here today,” said one mall customer.

With school starting tomorrow for many students on Long Island the crowds at the Roosevelt Field Mall were in full force.

“They wanted last minute clothes and goodies like iPad covers that they don't need,” added another mall customer.

What students need and what they want can definitely vary according to one recent survey. Families with school age children spend an average of $635 on back to school stuff this year.

Last year it was $689.

“I didn’t spend a lot last year, I’m cautious about spending,” said one mother at the mall.

Although many city students start school next week, shoppers hoped to find a good deal at the Queens Center Mall and they’re not alone. One stat says 61 percent of back to school shopping is done at department stores.

“The jackets, the bookbag -- all that swag stuff.”

Swag style, that’s why many teens say even the school bag you buy, is important. Lucky for them, dad is picking up the bill. He’s one of the estimated 80 percent who is really trying to save this year.

“You have to get a second job, it's getting so expensive every year,” said one father at the mall with his son.

And obviously, parents are spending money on school supplies, electronics but the big tickets items, the most money they’re still spending on their kids of course is still on clothing -- especially jeans and sneakers.

Federal authorities say seven Long Island restaurants have agreed to pay nearly $1.7 million in back wages to 363 waiters and kitchen workers. The U.S. Labor Department says the restaurants - six in Suffolk and one in Nassau - were accused of paying workers below the federal minimum wage of $7.25 per hour. They also were accused of paying employees off the books, failing to pay time and a half for overtime and other violations.
