Carroll County family can keep chickens; rooster must go

Posted: Updated:
CARROLL COUNTY, Ga. -

The Carroll County Commission ruled that a family can keep chickens in their backyard, but a noisy rooster must go.

The Bartrug family says their chickens are therapeutic for their autistic son. Teresa Bartrug says that caring for the chickens helps her 5-year-old son, Ryan, ease his mind. The boy has Asperger's syndrome.

"Ryan has had hand-on-hand contact with these birds since they were a day old.  He's been holding them.  He's been helping his mom feed them," Teresa said.

The chickens  ran afoul of a neighbor, who complained that the rooster's crow was a nuisance.

"Automatically starts calling different people complaining about the rooster's crowing and citations were sent out for us to either get permits for conditional uses for the chickens or to get rid of them," said Bartrug.

Teresa Bartrug said that if the commission had voted to have the family get rid of all the chickens, she would have packed up and moved.

"I'm at a point now where I want to just move, I don't want to live here," Teresa Bartrug said. "If someone is going to dictate what I can have on my property, I don't want to be here neither does my family."

At Tuesday night's Carroll County Commission meeting, the Bartrugs were told they could keep the chickens, but the rooster had to crow somewhere else.

FOX 5 tried to reach the neighbors filing the complaint but we couldn't reach them. Other neighbors said they don't mind the chickens or the noise they make.
