Gainesville talks placing rifles in school offices

Posted: Updated:

A school district in north Georgia is proposing to store rifles inside of schools that could be used in emergencies.

School officials in Gainesville, Ga. are looking to provide the district's school resource officers with more firepower after recent school shootings.

"These things happen quickly, they happen unexpectedly and in places and locations where we can't anticipate.  Any lapse of time to get a weapon would be detrimental in an emergency," said Gainesville City Schools Superintendent Merrianne Dyer.

Officers at three schools -- Gainesville High School, Gainesville Middle School and Wood's Mill Academy – would have access to the weapons.

Resource officers say they need the bigger weapons to respond to people packing the same kind of heat.

"If we have an officer in the school and there is and there is an intruder that needs to be addressed, we don't want that officer to leave the school because he then may not have access back in," said Lt. Jay Parrish of the Gainesville Police Department. "Once we make entry and we breach the door, we're not leaving until the situation is over with."

Residents that FOX 5 talked to generally welcomed the proposal.

"We need someone that was responsible, that can think on their feet and act fast and protect our children," said Bonnie Akins.

The issue is expected to be voted on by the school board in October.
