TSA pre-screening program to come to more NY airports

Posted: Updated:
NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -

The Transportation Security Administration will expand its expedited screening program to 60 new airports, including five airports in New York, by the end of 2013, the agency announced Wednesday.

The TSA Pre-check program, as it is called, is already in place in 40 airports, including Kennedy, Newark, and LaGuardia in the New York City area. The expansion will include Albany International Airport, Buffalo Niagara International Airport, Greater Rochester International Airport, Syracuse Hancock International Airport, and Westchester County Airport, TSA said.

"As TSA continues to move away from a one-size-fits-all approach to transportation security, we are looking for more opportunities to provide the most effective security in the most efficient way possible," TSA Administrator John Pistole said in a news release. "Expanding TSA Pre-check to more locations enables many more passengers across the country to experience expedited screening."

Travelers who are approved for TSA Pre-check are allowed to leave on their shoes, light outerwear and belt, keep their laptop in its case and their 3-1-1 compliant liquids/gels bag in a carry-on in select screening lanes, the TSA said. To be eligible, you must be a U.S. citizen and a member of frequent traveler program of a participating airline. U.S. citizens who are members of a U.S. Customs and Border Protection Trusted Traveler program and Canadian citizens who are members of CBP's NEXUS program are also qualified to participate.

The TSA plans to launch an application process later this year that will allow more Americans to participate.

When the expansion takes place, these are the airports in New, York, New Jersey, Connecticut, and Pennsylvania that will have TSA Pre-check.

Only 10 percent of people who get CPR from a bystander actually survive. But two young men in Westchester County have now patented a device that could dramatically increase those odds and save lives. John and Chris DiCapua's sitting room in their parents' Westchester County home has had a unique guest lying around for quite a while now: a CPR dummy. What began as an idea from their time as Boy Scouts is now a device that could potentially save lives.
