'Bigorexia'

Posted: Updated:

Do you ever get carried away at the gym? Feel like you need to look like those ripped guys in gym commercials?

Your burning desire to get bigger and bigger might be a big problem for your health -- both mental and physical. It's known as "bigorexia," also known as body dysmorphic disorder, an OCD-type disorder similar to anorexia and bulimia.

"People are looking for direct control in life where they have effect on circumstance and getting big is a pretty easy way to do it

Eric von Frohlich, a fitness expert, owns Upper East Side's EVF Performance Crossfit gym. His strength director, Dave Kirschen, benches over 600 pounds and squats 800 so both know about big. Both say bigorexia is particularly prevalent in teens.

Bigorexia warning signs include increased aggression or over doing it on diet and exercise. Sometimes that aggression is because of steroids or human growth hormone, something those who suffer from bigorexia tend to turn to. That could be potentially a very real problem for your health.

HGH causes everything to grow, not just your muscles, so it could make tumors grow faster.

Forget you kids. Warning parents: you're the ones who are going to need earmuffs for this sick little story. We asked some kids: What are the three worst words you know? We got some choice answers. I'm not trying to lose my job, really. I'm just using some old journalistic chops by testing the validity of a new study published in the American Journal of Psychology.

As if dating isn't hard enough, what if you had to do it in the 1950s? A copy of a dating guide from back then is pretty much a sign of the times. The courtship of that special someone is an ageless dilemma. Craig has some advice for the modern man: don't go to the movies on a first date and look her in the eye.

A year and a half after Superstorm Sandy hit New York, a major city emergency facility that was destroyed finally fully reopened Thursday — with waterproof walls. Gov. Andrew Cuomo joined Mayor Bill de Blasio and other dignitaries to celebrate the emergency complex at the NYU Langone Medical Center, which is now triple the size of the old one and equipped with the latest technology.
