CHICAGO (Sun-Times Media Wire) -

An 18-year-old who sporadically attended a north suburban high school has been charged with second-degree murder in New York, Pioneer Press is reporting.

Maxwell Sherman, of Long Beach, N.Y., was arrested Aug. 24 in connection with the death of an 18-year-old woman who also lived on Long Island, according to the Nassau County Sheriff's office.

The former Barrington High School student was arraigned Aug. 25 in Hempstead, N.Y., First District Court.

Sherman and his family split time between their New York and Barrington homes, said Jeff Arnett, spokesman for Barrington Unit District 220.

Sherman attended classes at Barrington High last year, but Arnett was unsure if he obtained a diploma from District 220.

The murder investigation, Nassau County police said, began Aug. 22 when the body of Lauren Daverin was discovered about 10 p.m. on a pond's footbridge in Rockville Centre, N.Y.

The Rockville Centre Herald reported Sherman "allegedly strangled Daverin to death" and left her "nude and in a pool of blood, according to those who found her body."

Daverin was pronounced dead at the scene.
