37 arrests during MCSO's 'deadbeat parents' round up

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. -

Sheriff Joe Arpaio launched an operation to arrest moms and dads who aren't paying child support on Saturday.

Maricopa County Sheriff's deputies and posse volunteers made rounds and served 622 child support warrants across the valley.

76 of those parents are mothers.

The valley's most wanted moms and dads are accused of skipping out on child support payments.

Some owe as much as $175,000, but all together the 20 most wanted parents owe $1.1 million.

Deputy Marie Trombi has 14 years of experience serving warrants under her belt.

"You do think of, 'What if? What if they're in there and it goes bad real fast.' You think about what you're gonna do first," said Trombi.

Trombi and posse members spent Saturday morning seeking parents who could afford to live in north Scottsdale, even in the high-end Grayhawk area, but still won't pay child support.

"To leave your child, basically high and dry, I think this very necessary duty that we're doing here today. They need to be in jail," said Trombi.

By 10 a.m., deputies like Trombi and posse volunteers already took in a handful of dads and one mom.

Sheriff Joe Arpaio believes when a single parent has to work multiple jobs to support a family, it can lead children down a dangerous path.

"Lack of supervision could involve these kids in gangs and drugs because the mother, sometimes the father, have to work all these jobs because they're not getting the money to pay the child support," said Arpaio.

Every mom and dad taken in Saturday was taken to the command post near Central and Thomas. They then get loaded onto a bus that takes them to jail.

"My message is be a man or woman and surrender to the Sheriff's office, but they're not gonna do it. We have to track them down, drag them outta their houses and take them to the tents with a free bus ride," said Arpaio.

Many parents are taken to Tent City and given work release so they can make their child support payments.

There were a total of 37 arrests, 49 cleared warrants and over $203,000 in Child Support collected as a result of Saturday's operation.
