MCSO to help Tempe PD tackle out-of-control student partiers

TEMPE, Ariz. -

Much has been made surrounding Greek life at ASU. In fact, alcohol played a factor in a number of incidents recently involving fraternity members getting into fights.

But Tempe police want to change that, and they're bringing in some high profile reinforcement.

The Maricopa County Sheriff's Office has offered to help Tempe PD tackle the problem of out-of-control co-eds.

"What police in Tempe are seeing is that parties today are not like the bygone days of occasional drunkenness and disorderly conduct," says Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio.

"These parties have become virtual melees... masses of underage drinkers behaving badly, resorting to violence towards each other," he added.

The sheriff called for a crime suppression operation starting Thursday and it will continue on weekends -- as long as it takes to get campus partying under control, he said.

A command post will be set up in front of the Tempe Fire Department Training facility at University and Dorsey Streets in Tempe to accommodate arrests and jail bookings.
