New LA County Program Offering Healthier Kid's Meals

Posted: Updated:

LA County Health Department officials say childhood obesity rates are climbing.  It rose from about 17 percent to 20 percent in LA county between 2003-11.

Now the County is partnering with restaurants offering smaller portions and special kids meals.   Subway and Poquito Mas restaurants are already participating.   Smaller portions, manager David Bran says, can cut calorie intake by 40 percent.  For kids meals, Poquito Mas offers sliced apples instead of rice to accompany a small burrito and black beans.

LA County Health department's Dr. Jonathan Fielding says, "the small changes in what we eat everyday at every meal can make a huge difference in our weight and overall health."

Soon restaurants with healthier meal options will have a sticker in their windows indicating their partnership with the County's health program.
