Owner Of Last Business Burned In Seaside Blaze Reacts

Posted: Updated:
SEASIDE HEIGHTS, N.J. -

The owner of the last business burned before the raging Seaside boardwalk fire was stopped at Lincoln Avenue, spoke live with FOX 29's Steve Keeley on Friday morning.

SLIDESHOW: Seaside Boardwalk Fire

John Sundermann, who grew up in Philadelphia's West Oak Lane section, moved down the shore after he got out of college and opened "Big John's." The store sells all of those beach clothes, the hottest T-shirts of the summer and has arcade games.

His son, Jake, was in the business when the fire broke out and saw the smoke. He called his dad and, because of their prior experience in the storm, they started moving stuff out right away.

A computer and some jerseys were moved out of the store before they finally had to back up when the smoke got too bad.

Jake Sundermann said he even locked the doors as he was leaving, expecting that the fire wouldn't reach their shop.

John Sundermann says he got down to the scene in time to see the front third of his business was badly burned. He also saw firefighters pouring water in side doors, so he believes the contents will be a total loss.

Both father and son agreed, however, that the fire wasn't as bad as Superstorm Sandy, which left substantial water damage throughout the beach community and deposited sand in their store.

You can see the complete interviews with Jake and John Sundermann in the video clips above.
