PISCATAWAY, N.J. (AP) - The birthplace of college football is going to do something it has never done before when Rutgers takes on Eastern Michigan (1-1).

For the first time in the 144-year history of the program, the Scarlet Knights (1-1) are going to retire a number - the No. 52 worn by Eric LeGrand.

The 23-year-old has become 1 of the program's most inspirational players. Despite a career-ending neck injury in a game against Army in 2010 that left him paralyzed from the neck down, LeGrand has become a national symbol of hope. His goal remains to walk again and he regularly speaks to organizations about overcoming obstacles.

"The most important message or the most important thing I try to say about Eric when people ask me questions about him is, Eric was every bit as inspirational, before anything happened," Rutgers coach Kyle Flood said. "He was 1 of the first players who committed to his year in the recruiting class, and from the moment he stepped on our campus, he was a huge part of the athletic department, not just the football team."

Heading into the U.S. Open, Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal, Novak Djokovic and Andy Murray have won 36 of the past 38 Grand Slam titles, a stretch dating to the 2005 French Open. Nowadays, there seems to be a growing sense — or hope, maybe — among the best of the rest on the men's tennis tour that the quartet might be more vulnerable than ever.

Out of over 500 hopefuls only a handful will join the Brooklyn Nets Kids Dance Team. The Nets held auditions this week at LIU Brooklyn. Adorable Bronx native Arielle was turned away last year but this time around she's made it through to the final round of the auditions. But even those who were on the team last year still have to try out.

Chris Rock almost made the play of the day at Yankee Stadium. Instead, the comedian wound up with a nice prize -- a foul ball that nearly landed in his lap during Thursday's game between the Houston Astros and New York Yankees.
