Seaside Merchants Rolling Up Sleeves To Start Over

Posted: Updated:
SEASIDE PARK, N.J. -

New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie returns to the Seaside boardwalk two days after a fire swept by strong wind destroyed four blocks of the famous pier, and he has a message for residents.

The governor told them that this is not the time for fatigue or sadness. Instead, they're rolling up their sleeves and starting over, FOX 29's Omari Fleming reports.

Well-wishers and onlookers gathered with locals to greet Christie as he made his way through the area.

Seaside also suffered significant damage from Superstorm Sandy last fall.

Christie says his cabinet is already working on a response to the fire.

"We talk about certain things but then you have to deliver. And we've done a pretty good job of delivering. I think that's why you see so many people being as grateful as they are," Christie said.

"So, now, this is the next challenge for us to confront. The bad thing in the last four years, as I mentioned the other night, is all the different natural disaster crises we've had in the last four years. The only good thing about it is that it's really trained me and the administration to know how to respond to these things. It's not our first time at this rodeo unfortunately."

The governor also met with 30 business owners who lost property during the fire.

There was still no word Saturday night on what sparked that fire. The Ocean County Prosecutor's Office is leading the investigation, searching for answers.
