Haters on Twitter: The New Miss Indian-America

Posted: Updated:

Instead of congratulating the new Miss America, Nina Davuluri, some people are flooding Twitter with hateful messages. I say some because these days with social media, it seems like a few annoying, unreasonable people are given access and a voice to spread hate. And somehow...sadly...they succeed.

We discussed these haters on Twitter this morning during our newscasts and throughout the day a number of articles have been published on this very topic.

Why are some criticizing Nina Davuluri? She is beautiful, appears to be intelligent and talented... so what's the problem? According to some she "isn't American enough."

That's about it.

Davuluri grew up in Syracuse, New York. She just so happens to be of Indian heritage. She went to the University of Michigan, earned a degree in brain behavior and cognitive science and aspires to be a doctor like her father someday.

Davuluri is clearly proud of her Indian heritage, as she should be. Her talent routine was a Bollywood dance, which I would say was incredibly memorable and made her stand out without question. But I guess that was the problem for some. This was the first time a Bollywood dance was performed on the Miss America stage. It was also the first time an Indian-American won the title.

It's unfortunate that tweets like the following were sent out:

  • Savannah Dale: "Miss New York is an Indian.. with all do respect, this is America."
  • Granvil Colt: "And the Arab wins Miss America. Classic."
  • De La Rutherford: "Congratulations Al-Qaeda. Our Miss America is one of you."

These comments are a bit ridiculous...Yes, Miss New York is Indian, and yes this is America. Which is what makes this country so great- the diversity. Also, Indians are not Arabs, even if she was Arab why should that matter?

And to bring Al-Qaeda into the mix is beyond ignorant.

According to Davuluri's grandmother, becoming Miss America was Nina's dream... and she fulfilled her dream Sunday night. In this country, we have a chance to dream...and to turn our dream into a reality.

So with that.... I would like to congratulate the new Miss America, Nina Davuluri!

By the way, Nina wasn't the only one who had to deal with racist remarks, the runner up - Miss California, Crystal Lee, had her share of nonsense to deal with.

Lee is of Chinese decent.
