ATLANTA -

Georgia State University's Keep HOPE Alive program targets students who lose their HOPE Scholarship due to fallen grades.  It's intended to help them refocus on their academics and regain their scholarships as soon as possible.

They also receive a little bit of money from the school once they re-qualify for HOPE.

Gloria Pineda says she works hard to stay in school. The GSU sophomore works two jobs to make that happen. She says the scholarships she receives are invaluable to her.

"It's what separated me from attending or not, because, financially, my parents would not be able to support me," she said.

Gloria isn't alone. At Georgia State, about 75 percent of incoming freshman are HOPE recipients. It's open to Georgia residents who maintain a 3.0 grade-point average. But, maintaining that GPA and the scholarship can sometimes difficult students.

The financial blow to students can often be accompanied by emotional and psychological blow, as well. Of the students who lost, HOPE, only 50 percent graduate.

Georgia State is fighting to retain those who lost their HOPE funds. It's called Keep HOPE Alive and it provides academic coaching, workshops and specialized advisements to students who have fallen behind.

More than 60 percent of the students who complete the program, regain their HOPE scholarships. This is compared to the 10 percent of those aren't in the program.

It's the difference between earning a diploma and not earning one.
