T.J. Simers: I Was Raised To Be A Rebel

Posted: Updated:

L.A. sports fans know who T.J. Simers is and they either love him or hate him. When word got out he was leaving the L.A. Times after working there for almost 23 years, the rumor mill began to swirl. Why did they part ways? T.J. gave his side of the story to Steve Thursday morning and it involved a certain former Dodgers owner.

"We battled. Early on they had Frank McCourt who was influencing the news and the way we presented it. Just think about that for a moment. You got one of the most hated guys in L.A. who was the pal of the publisher of the paper and we were told to tone down our criticism..."

Simers says that wasn't the only time he butted heads with his bosses about what he was writing.

"I was asked to tone it down when I started to rip on the Angels because they're doing a fantastic job of advertising in the Times right now and I'm sure it's just a coincidence."

Another rumor is that the Times gave T.J. his walking papers but he says the opposite happened.

"In the end the L.A. Times offered me a guaranteed contract to stay and I chose not to do that. I couldn't trust the people I was working for."

T.J. says he thought his career was over until the Orange County Register offered him his new gig: writing columns for them.

"The Register said would you like to come here and have fun? I said let's do it!"

Steve also asked about his relationship with Angels owner Arte Marino and the fact T.J.'s now doing what he does in the O.C.

"I'm sure he's thrilled to see me just down the road...The thing with Arte is I once wrote a column that said 'you have to ask the problem, is Arte part of the problem?'. From that point on, off the map. That was it."

TJ's column publishes on page 2 of the sports section in the orange county register on tuesdays, thursdays, and sundays, and he'll write daily updates on ocregister.com.
