UPS: Fewer left-hand turns saving drivers time, money

Posted: Updated:
ATLANTA -

It turns out that your vehicle's left-hand turns might be costing you in more ways than one! They're risky and can guzzle not just more of your time, but also more of your gas money.

SKYFOX Traffic's Katie Beasley, however, can show you how a Fortune 500 company is putting efficiency and your safety first to make a difference.

UPS, or United Parcel Service, drives 3 billion miles per year. Their drivers go through vigorous training before they hit the road, too. Now, some of their trips could actually help keep you safer behind the wheel.

Dispatch supervisor Matthew Frost says he spent about six years aboard a ‘Brown' truck. Now, he helps plan the trucks' routes.

"We have 110,000 drivers. We log 3 billion miles a year and we average less than one accident per 1 million miles," he said.

It may surprise you to find out that one of their key strategies is working to avoid making left-hand turns.

The notion of 'Keeping up with the Jones' is not new, but there is a new pressure coming at you. Peer pressure - whether you're 13 or 33 - is a powerful thing. Now throw in social media and you have what an Atlanta counselor calls 'Keeping up with the Jones' on steroids. And if you're not careful that can get costly.
