Georgia 400 toll booths nearing end of their road

Posted: Updated:
ATLANTA -

Very soon, driving on heavily trafficked Georgia 400 will not only be easier, but cheaper, too. The State of Georgia is nearing its end with the GA 400 tolls.

In the coming weeks, four Open House meetings are scheduled to give the general public a look at preliminary plans for ending the toll collections and demolishing the GA 400 toll booths.

While the meetings won't feature any presentations, there will be Georgia Department of Transportation officials on-hand to explain how the $4.5 million project will be implemented.

The first Open House meeting runs from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 24. It's taking place at the Greater North Fulton Chamber of Commerce on Haynes Bridge Road in Alpharetta.

The days of drivers on GA 400 hurriedly digging into coin purses, car seat cushions and glove boxes to find 50 cents for the tolls are almost a memory. Soon, motorists will be driving though the GA 400 toll plaza in a fashion similar to having the Peach Pass.

"As to the demolition schedule, some construction work will begin as early as October," said GDOT Commissioner Keith Golden. He says the goal is to stop collecting tolls on 400 by the week before Thanksgiving. It's a definite holiday treat for drivers.

For drivers worried about demo work on the toll booths causing traffic delays, Commissioner Golden said, "Most of the work will be done at night and outside of which we call the actual construction and general purpose lanes. So, the work should have very minimal impact on the public."

Tearing down the toll plaza means the loss of $21 million a year for the State of Georgia. It's possible the tolls could return to GA 400 in the form of additional managed lanes.
