Body parts discovered in sewer for third time

Posted: Updated:
STERLING HEIGHTS, Mich. (WJBK) -

For the third time in a little over a year crews working on a sewer line discovered human remains.

Lt. Kevin Reese says crew made the discovery Wednesday morning on a sewer grate located along 15 Mile Road, east of Maple Lane in Sterling Heights.

Reese says the remains are that of a Caucasian and were turned over to the Macomb County Medical Examiners office for examination.

DNA samples will be submitted to the University of North Texas Center for Human Identification for further testing.

Reese says the possibility exists that the parts could be improperly disposed medical waste.

The location where the parts were dumped may be hard to determine. The interceptor runs 21 miles from Oakland to Macomb and the entry point could be almost anywhere.

Officials have said partial remains found in August 2012 in a sewer in Sterling Heights came from a woman, but not the same woman whose body parts were discovered in December 2012 in a sewer line in the nearby community of Warren.
