Water officials: Don't flush deposable wipes

Posted: Updated:
ATLANTA -

A new bathroom product is clogging up sewers in Atlanta. Moist wipes are being touted as an alternative to toilet tissue, but water officials are asking people not to flush them.

Atlanta Department of Watershed Management officials worry that if the toilet tissue alternative takes off in popularity, it could create problems at the city's 16 sewage treatment plants.

"If it gets into a pipe, it can -- especially if it ropes up -- it can stop a pump from running," said Frank Stephens, the deputy commissioner at the Atlanta Department of Watershed Management.

Stephens advises people to throw the deposable wipes into the trash instead of the toilet.

"Note that is not particular to the city of Atlanta," Stephens said. "Doing some benchmarking conversations with utilities in California and Pennsylvania, this is actually an industry-wide situation. "

Stephens said the wipes can cause environmental problems as well as damage both city and personal plumbing systems.
