Veteran who was beaten in attack relieved by arrests

Posted: Updated:

Two suspects charged in the vicious beating of an elderly man waived their first court appearance on Saturday.  Creston Portis' story made national headlines this week, and now he tells FOX 5 he's relieved that two of the three people police say attacked him have been caught.

Portis says for the first time in weeks, it feels like things are looking up.  The 80-year-old veteran says he's feeling better each day, and he praises police for making two quick arrests.

On Thursday, East Point police arrested 21-year-old Dexter Ware and 22-year-old Iesha Washington, charging them in the attacks on Portis.  Investigators say they and another man blocked Portis in his driveway with their car and demanded that he get out of the vehicle.  When Portis refused, police say the attackers broke his car window, pulled him out and beat him with a brick.

Portis' cheekbones were broken, and he suffered other injuries as well.  The attackers stole his wallet.

Ware and Washington face a number of charges, including allegations they used Portis' credit cards at a gas station near his house.  The third suspect, a man police identify as Ricky Wilcoxson, remains on the run.

Portis says he trusts police will protect him and find Wilcoxson soon.  He also says the support he has gotten during this ordeal from the community has been incredible.
