$1000 in crisp, green $100 bills turn up at e-cycling event!

PLYMOUTH TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WJBK) -

An event meant to help people go green turns up a pile of "green" in Plymouth Township. Workers found $1000 cash among electronic waste dropped off for recycling. Then, they went searching for the owner!

The big e-waste recycling event yielded all kinds of things, microwave ovens, old laptops, TV's, even copy machines. And, something else no one expected! A stack of $100 bills. Brodie Ehresman with Advanced Technology Recycling found them while he was trying to remove some rechargeable batteries from an old flashlight.

"I opened up the box and as I pulled out the flashlight that was inside, there was $1000 in A$100 bills inside the box," he said.

It was a great green find at a green e-cycling event. But Ehresman wanted to get the money back to the person it belonged to. Turns out, one of the other workers had stopped to chat with the man who turned over that flashlight.

"I remember talking to him," Whitney Ehresman told Fox 2. "He took the time when he dropped off his electronics to ask about recycling. He seemed really excited to do the right thing. I remember he said he worked in the area, his car was kind of this reddish-orange car."

Problem is, the guy had already taken off. But, the electronics recyclers were determined to find him. So, they hit the road and started driving around.

"Through a process of elimination and checking with local businesses and driving through their parking lots for about an hour we finally came across the car," Ehresman said. "We recognized it was the one!"

The very surprised e-cycler was Steve Rayna of Flint. He was thrilled to get the cash. Turns out, the flashlight belonged to his late father-in-law who probably stashed the money in the box. Steve had no idea. As a token of his appreciation he bought the crew pizza and gave them $100 to donate to their favorite charity.
