DETROIT (WJBK) -

One of our Michigan lawmakers involved in the government shutdown showdown was honored Sunday for 50 years of service. A big event was held to honor Congressman John Conyers at Greater Grace Temple in Detroit and another face in the crowd drew a lot of attention.

He's the second longest serving incumbent in Congress and the longest serving African American. John Conyers is a fixture in Washington and a champion for Civil Rights. It was a packed house and a star studded affair as people gathered to honor him.

Sheriff Benny Napoleon, who's running for mayor, and Detroit Mayor Dave Bing were just a few of the familiar faces in the crowd. Others included the Four Tops and Louis Farrakhan and former Detroit City Council member Monica Conyers, who came to support her husband. It was her first public appearance since she was released from prison in May following a bribery conviction in 2010.

Known for his commitment to Civil Rights, Conyers is also a supporter of Obamacare - a big part of the controversial law takes effect Tuesday with the launch of health care changes.

"October 1st is the start and not the finish," Conyers said. "We have our staff working hard to get everybody registered."
