New home construction begins in town of Yarnell

Posted: Updated:
YARNELL, Ariz. -

Monday night, there will be a groundbreaking ceremony to mark the beginning of construction on two new homes in Yarnell.

The homeowners who are getting new homes had their homes destroyed three months ago in the Yarnell Hill wildfire. They didn't have insurance.

"I find it phenomenal. It restores your faith in humanity. Or it did mine," says Debi Keehner. Her home was lost in the fire.

Almost everything inside it was destroyed, except for one thing -- a Bible given to her by her grandmother.

"Books underneath it all burned around the edges. But this did not. Message? I don't know, I just know it was a very goose-bumpy situation."

"We have a place we can come back to," says Steve Keehner. "Even if it's a burned off lot, it's ours. The 19 firefighters cannot go home again. And that's the main thing I want people to know."

The Yarnell Hill Recovery Group is rebuilding those homes at no cost to the homeowners. More than 100 homes were destroyed by the fire.

Last Saturday, officials released a report on the fire investigation.

While a lot was revealed in the 116 pages, there are a lot of questions we will never have answered.

On June 30, 19 Granite Mountain Hotshots were on a ridge fighting the Yarnell Hill fire that was moving away from them.

But around 4 p.m., the crew left the ridge. No one knows why. The fire changed direction and overran the firefighters.

Investigators say no one asked them to change location. In fact, they say vague radio communication led to confusion over where they were.
