Several options this year to fight the flu

PHOENIX -

Doctors say it's also the early days of the flu season. Health officials are making a big push for people to get vaccinated early, before the flu really takes hold.

The flu vaccines are already in.

"Everyone should get vaccinated from the flu."

Nobody likes a shot, but health officials say catching the flu would be a more uncomfortable alternative.

"It's a serious disease that happens every year, thousand die from flu every year so our main message is how important vaccines are," said Clarisse Tsang, AZ Department of Health Services.

"You definitely want to get it sooner than later because you never know when you will be exposed to it."

Doctors say the flu vaccine is still the best way to avoid catching the flu, and this year there are several options.

For those who just can't bear to get a shot, there's a nasal spray.

There's also a special high dose shot for those 65 and older.

And also a vaccine that isn't grown in chicken eggs as it usually is -- so even people with egg allergies can be vaccinated this year.

Several options to stay healthy this year.

"Everyone is at risk for getting the flu so everyone 6 months or older needs to get vaccinated not just to protect yourself but also those around you," said Tsang. "Last year we got hit pretty bad so we don't want to underestimate what this season might bring."

Symptoms for the flu include coughing, fever, and muscle aches, but those symptoms alone don't necessarily mean you have the flu.

The best thing to do if you do experience those symptoms is to stay home to get better and not get anyone else sick.
