Thousands furloughed at TACOM, Selfridge Air National Guard Base

(WJBK) -

Thousands of employees are furloughed at TACOM and Selfridge Air National Guard Base, with other possible furloughs on the way. Many showed up to work today but were sent home.

"She got the message today not to come to work and they'll be on furlough for a short period of time," Brian Ward tells Fox 2's Randy Wimbley. His wife works at the Selfridge Commissary and is now one of 650 who cannot return to work at the base until the end of the government shutdown. But the shutdown could have a domino effect.

Angie Heber's works for the Army Airforce Exchange. Her department at Selfridge is still open, but it may not be for much longer.

"Since we are primarily a retiree base, a lot of our customers do come to shop the commissary. So with them  being closed it will hurt us," Herber tells Wimbley. She says if sales decline her department will have to reevaluate its hours of operation.

In addition to workers at Selfridge, thousands are also furloughed at TACOM. Nearly four thousand workers are furloughed between the two institutions. Contractors at TACOM were told their jobs are on hold for now and that more notices could be on the way for the thousands of other civilians working there.

Macomb County Executive Mark Hackell says the battle over The Affordable Care Act in Washington is taking a toll on metro Detroiters. "The economic impact of people that live in the county, and the region, that work at Selfridge as well as TACOM that are not going to be employed. Obviously it's a concern because those people making money spend money," Hackell says.

Here is additional information about Selfridge operations during the government shutdown as posted on its website:

- A minimum number of personnel in these statuses remain on duty: Primarily fire department, security and air traffic control personnel.
- Approximately 150 active duty members of the 127th Wing at Selfridge remain on duty.
- The Selfridge Commissary is open on Oct. 1, but will be closed beginning Oct. 2 for the remaining duration of the shutdown.
- The Selfridge Base Exchange and the base golf course will remain open, both of which operate primarily on revenue from operations.
- The Oct. 5-6 Unit Training Assembly for the 127th Wing, commonly referred to as drill weekend, has been canceled. 127th Wing members are directed NOT to report to the October UTA.
- Most flying operations at Selfridge have been canceled until further notice. The Selfridge air field will continue to be used for mission critical operations, such as Coast Guard search and rescue.
- Approximately 50 members of the 127th Wing are deployed overseas as of Oct. 1, and will continue their mission. About two dozen members of the 127th Security Forces Squadron are deployed to southwest Asia. About two dozen members of the 127th Air Refueling Group, with Selfridge-based KC-135 Stratotanker aircraft, are deployed to Guam.
- The 127th Wing's website will not be updated during the shutdown. Messages may be communicated through the Wing's Facebook page.
