Carnegie Hall cancels opening night concert

Posted: Updated:

NEW YORK (AP) - Carnegie Hall is canceling its season opening concert by The Philadelphia Orchestra due to a strike by its stagehands.

The New York concert hall says the performance featuring violinist Joshua Bell had been set for 7 p.m. Wednesday. Future performances remain on schedule.

The International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees and Carnegie Hall have been in talks over a new contract since mid-2012.

Carnegie Hall says the dispute centers on the union's demand for jurisdiction over the Education Wing that's set to open next year.

It says that would divert funds from its music education programs and into stagehand fees.

A recorded message on the union's telephone says it walked out because it couldn't reach an agreement. No one immediately returned a call for comment.

To say the 6 feet 5 inch Baloji has a presence would be an understatement. The Belgian artist commands the stage with his mix of hip hop, funk, and rap. The 34-year-old rocked out Webster Hall back in January. Now he's back in New York City kicking off a month-long tour. "It's one of the most inspiring cities on Earth so it's always great to be here," Baloji says.
