Arizona 9-1-1 Dispatcher Under Fire For Laughing

Posted: Updated:

An Arizona 9-1-1 dispatcher is in hot water for cracking up under pressure.

The Pima County dispatcher got the giggles while taking a call about a woman on fire.

Lalo Delgado, the man making the frantic call, says it's no laughing matter. He says his girlfriend caught on fire in a freak accident after his car burst into flames. He was stuck in the middle of nowhere and really needed help fast. He got cackles instead of concern, and he had to dial 9-1-1 again and call for help a second time.

Pima County officials say that the incident did not delay the response time, but they are investigating the call.

Delgado says, "Her initial reaction was laugh and just giggling in the background. It was very disturbing."

"You're calling for help. You shouldn't be laughed at," he continues.

Captain Jim Berry from the Pima County Sheriff's Department says, "We did not perform at the level I expect or the citizens of this county should expect us to. We are going to correct that. Certainly I can understand why the caller was upset by that. I would be too."

Berry says that the department is investigating what the laughter was about.

"If she wasn't playing around, giggling, I think she would have been just right on it," Delgado says. "If it's a minute, two minutes, you know every minute counts…Hopefully the next person to call 9-1-1 won't get laughed at."

The dispatcher is still on the job pending the investigation. Delgado says his girlfriend is badly burned, but recovering. Watch the video above to hear the full call.
