Peter Riegert: Like A Movie With 200 People Watching

Posted: Updated:

Peter Riegert has been in the business for a long time. He's done plays, movies, and television. Whether it's "Animal House", "Local Hero" or his new show "Dads", the way he picks projects remains the same.

"I apply the three gag rule, which is if I can read a script without gagging more than three times, then maybe I can say yes to this job."

All joking aside, Peter told Steve and Julie that he's having a blast working on "Dads" because of the talent in front of and behind the camera.

"We have a superb cast. The writers are, they're all the guys who wrote "Family Guy" and "Ted". Seth (MacFarlane) is the Executive Producer so these are his guys, he trusts them, and he's available...whenever it's necessary."

Despite his long career, the veteran actor is still a rookie when it comes to working on his first sitcom.

"People used to say to me it's like doing a play but it's really not. It's a movie with 200 people watching, so your ear has to hear the audience but you have to modulate your voice because you have a microphone, so that was the biggest adjustment and I started in theater in 1971...when we did the pilot, I was projecting to the 200 people and they kept saying you have a microphone calm down!"

When Julie asked how he decides between doing comedy or drama, he didn't miss a beat.

"The old answer's probably the best and that is whatever somebody is going to be paying me for...I like it all, it's really the material...to me it's like music. If I'm reading a script, I'm hearing it..."
