Brush fire blocks traffic on key LA freeway

LOS ANGELES (AP/KTTV) - A 15-acre brush fire shut down parts of a Los Angeles area freeway early Saturday afternoon, stopping traffic in both directions on Interstate 5 near Newhall Pass.

City News Service reported that three fire agencies using bulldozers, air support and ground crews were battling the afternoon blaze on a hillside north of the junction of Interstate 5 and Interstate 14.

The news service says the flames had jumped to the west of the 5, blocking traffic on both freeways. All closures were lifted a few hours later.

Winds gusting to 65 mph were reported at 1:30 p.m. five miles southeast of the fire.

Hot, dry Santa Ana winds prompted red flag fire danger alerts through Sunday for much of Los Angeles, Orange, San Bernardino and Riverside counties.
