PHOENIX -

About 4,000 people took to the streets of downtown Phoenix to fight for immigration rights on Saturday.

It was part of a civil rights effort taking place in 40 states.

A sea of red filled the streets of downtown Phoenix Saturday morning starting at 9th Avenue and Washington.

In the crowd of thousands, shouting "si se puede" or "yes we can," were many moms like Petra Estrada, who came to this country from Acapulco, Mexico.

"It's hard to live here, but we're here and we want to fight for it," said Petra Estrada.

She came to fight for reform with her two children, 7-year-old Tony...

"I like this country a lot," said Tony Estrada, who was born in the US.

and 16-year-old Susan. She attends Coronado High School and wants to become a government interpreter.

"They have to be proud of it and she's a dreamer. She come here when she was 2-years-old and we're fighting," said Petra Estrada.

Many people in the march came to spread the word that they're here to work and make a difference in America.

"I clean houses and I'm very proud of that," said Petra Estrada.

"We are here because we want to make this country the place it has always been and a place of dreams for everybody," said Isabelle Moreno.

Moreno has lived in America for 26 years, where she raised her children.

"I have my kids and they're good kids. One of them is actually in Brophy Academy this year and I'm very proud of that," said Moreno.

Like most of these parents, she fears the future for her children and hopes the message in Phoenix touches government officials.

"To show Obama and everybody in government that we are all together and we are waiting for something to happen because too many years of people not listing in the shadow families are falling apart," said Moreno.

"We just want to be safe and we want to be free. This is a country of freedom too, we want it," said Petra Estrada.

Demonstrators marched all the way to the federal court house near 7th Avenue.

Other rallies and marches took place in cities such as Dallas, Atlanta, Houston and Los Angeles.
