Things That Couldn't Happen In Real Life

Posted: Updated:

'Gravity' starring Sandra Bullock and George Clooney is the number one movie at the box office. And while fans and critics are loving it...some scientists say you can't believe everything you're seeing on the big screen.

'Gravity' is the fictional space thriller that broke some box office records this past weekend, pulling in 55.6-million dollars....the best October opening, and the best ever debut for each of it's stars.

Today on "The List" we're looking at some of the things scientists say couldn't happen in real life.

  • First up, the way the shuttle travels...it wouldn't really happen that way. If the shuttle was hit with debris, it wouldn't head in the direction it is set.
  • Speaking of travel... the satellites are wrong. nearly all satellites orbiting Earth travel west to east. The movie had it backwards.
  • A rendezvous in space is not easy. The movie makes docking looking easy and quick, but it takes time and skill.
  • And they question: why is a medical doctor working on the Hubble space telescope?

For the record, the director of the film Alfonso Cuaron, has said this is not a documentary...that of course they took certain liberties. In fact, the astronaut consultants were exasperated when the characters didn't bring their solar shield down...the director said you won't see their faces, so I'm not going to do it...the consultants said they would go blind.
