Authorities: Drug Ring Tried To Create Local Market For Crystal Meth

NORRISTOWN, Pa. -

Montgomery County District Attorney Risa Vetri Ferman said six men are arrested for starting a drug ring that would create a local market for crystal meth.

Investigators say the organization has been trying to create a market for crystal methamphetamine on the streets of Montgomery and Berks Counties.

They were arrested Tuesday as part of "Operation Breaking Bad".

"They are pushing this drug , this toxic, addictive ,dangerous substance into our communities," DA Ferman said. "We cannot stand by and allow these kind of traffickers and this kind of drug to have a foothold in our community."

Detectives say suspected drug trafficker Jose DeJesus Montilla was the ring leader who allegedly set up sales of meth to undercover investigators, selling a pound and a half of crystal meth for $43,000.

"Crystal meth is the product they want to sell because they can make the most money. There is very little competition for them," DA Ferman explained.

Ferman says the drug ring was based in Reading, but arranged the sale of meth and coke to undercover officers at a local farmer's market in Gilbertsville and in the parking lot of this McDonalds nearby. Berks

County DA John Adams says crystal meth is becoming a problem.

"It's disturbing and we need to bring it to a stop as soon as possible," he told reporters at a morning press conference to announce the arrests.

"If they can sell something like this here and create demand on our streets, they can take over this market," Ferman said as she held up a pound of crystal meth.

Experts say crystal meth is replacing home grown methamphetamine once popular in this region. It is dangerous and highly addictive. At least one of the defendants told investigators he was familiar with a

violent Mexican drug cartel known as "La Familia Michoacan".

"You're dealing with individuals with direct ties to Mexico. It is our understanding and belief that the drugs are manufactured at labs down in Mexico and then brought into the country," Ferman added.

"Drug dealers, criminals, they do not know any boundaries and unless we work together. We're not gonna make a difference," Adams said.

"They are looking to create that market for this poison in our community and that is what we're here to stop," Ferman told reporters."Once they come in, once they are entrenched, it would be very near impossible to get rid of them."

Five of the six defendants were in court Tuesday afternoon in Gilbertsville. They were ordered held on $1 million bail each. Several of the suspects have been deported back to Mexico in the past, but returned here illegally.

Montilla remains housed in the Berks County prison. The investigation is continuing.
